La EXPO

No veáis en Zaragoza, todo el quisqui hablando de la Expo. Yo estuve día y medio. Voy a contar mis impresiones de lo que ví, que fueron pabellones de países, plazas temáticas y un par de actuaciones.. En general me alegro mucho de haber ido. El ambiente me pareció super chulo.

Japón: Muy majo el audiovisual con el duendecillo de los bosques, y la cascada al final, que se descubre cuando se abre la pantalla. Después de eso poquita cosa, la verdad.

Francia: Mucho tiempo había que invertir para verlo bien. Había un juego sobre como tratar aguas residuales, que me sirvió para recordar mis conocimientos de la universidad. Lo mejor fue lo del esturión blanco, que se cría sólo en Aquitania por el super ecosistema tan propicio que tienen. Estos franceses siempre aprovechan para echarse alguna flor. Buen pabellón.

Comunidad del Caribe: La información de los países era más de turismo que otra cosa. Muy bien conseguido el ambiente caribeño. La gran atracción fueron los cócteles.

India: Podría calificarse de "pabellón-mercadillo". Cenamos en el restaurante indio, que no picaba, lo cual se agradece.

México: Demasiada cola para lo que había dentro. Se me quedó la frase "la democracia está hecha de agua".

Turquía: Muy bonito. Relacionaban el tema del agua con las fuentes más célebres del país, de las cuales había maquetas en tamaño natural muy bien conseguidas.

Mauritania: Pabellón austero pero uno de los mejores de la expoisición. Nada de chorradas electrónicas. Todo eran carteles y muestras sobre el país, que es lo que se echaba de menos en muchos pabellones, en los que todo lo que te mostraba eran proyecciones, todo moderno pichi guais pero no te contaban nada sobre el país. 

Arabia Saudí: Había basantes citas del Corán donde se citaba el agua como fuente de vida. No era espectacular pero sí curioso.

Bueno, esto es todo, de momento, no lo aseguro pero creo que habrá alguna segunda parte sobre esto.

Friendship

I set off for my country!!!

Tomorrow!!!

I really want to see the international exhibition. I miss many things of my former life, particularly my activities apart from my job. My church team and my volunteering were the activities which most satisfy me. There is also a multicultural fair and the organization where I used to be volunteer is participating. I will help them.

I am also really glad to see my longtime friends again. I know very nice people in my current country and I am sure I will miss them when I leave it definitely. But the thing is… we are all foreigners, most of us are here “passing through” so sooner or later we will move back or away. Sometimes I feel as if my friends here are a “patch”. It is not difficult to know new people but in general it is difficult to meet them up on a regular basis therefore the ties are not usually strong. Anyway, if some of you read this, I have to say you “thank you very much” and I would like to carry you inside my suitcase.

Pros y contras

Pues parece que por estos mundos la gente cumple las leyes y todo. No como en ciertos sitios que yo me sé que sólo se piensa en burlar la ley. Casi que no la puedes cumplir para no ser el hazmerreír de la sociedad.

Luego está la libertad de expresión. En eso no hay nada como mi casa. Aquí hay mucha mojigatería. Que si no se puede decir esto, que si no se puede decir lo otro, que todo el mundo se escandaliza según lo que digas. A veces todo eso se traduce en que nadie te da una opinión sincera. Y en esta vida la puñalada trapera te la dan en todos los países. Sólo que a algunos los ves venir y a otros no.

Infraestructuras y demás. Me quedo con mi patria. Eso del sabor de lo antiguo no siempre está bien. Por otro lado parece algo contradictorio, pero aunque se vea todo tan cutre las medidas de seguridad son altas. En todas las casas hay alarma contra incendios. Y por supuesto nada de fumar en NINGÚN sitio público. El que quiera fumar se tiene que ir pitando a la "rue".

Así como mujer, las peluquerías y salones de belleza como norma general son más caros. En las peluquerías alucinas porque por defecto no te lavan el pelo, lo tienes que pedir tú y por supuesto te cobran más. Eso sí, todo lo que te van a cobrar de más te lo avisan. 

Aquí todo el mundo se arrodilla en misa. En España casi nadie. No es que ser cristiano sea lo más cool del mundo mundial, pero al menos parece que no está, digamos perseguido y nadie te mira con rara por ello.

Puedo comprar productos de comercio justo en cualquier tienda y supermercado. No me hace falta específicamente ir a la tienda de Oxfam y cuatro más de la ciudad. Aunque aquí también voy a la tienda de Oxfam, que está muy bien .

Changed lives (I)

The main character of this study is the apostle Thomas. (John 20, 24-29)

On the evening of that first Easter Day the disciples were gathered together for mutual support in a locked room for fear of the Jewish authorities. How must they have been feeling?

Suddenly Jesus appears among them and they were delighted, but Thomas was not with them.

Verses 24 and 25

What did Thomas not believe that the other disciples had seen Jesus?

What evidence did he ask for?

Meanwhile Jesus knew what was going on in Thomas’ mind and so a week later…….

Verses 26-29

Jesus appears again to the disciples, deliberately to dispel Thomas’ doubts. Thomas is immediately and utterly convinced that Jesus is not just Teacher, Master, Messiah, Son of God, but GOD himself. Thomas believed on the evidence of his eyes, but Jesus gives a promise that makes the event meaningful for Christians everywhere and down through the ages: the people who have faith in me without seeing me are the ones who are really blessed.

So on what evidence are later generations to believe?

Verses 30 and 31

This book, and the whole of the Bible, was written so that you will put your faith in Jesus as the Messiah and the Son of God. If you have faith in him, you will have true life.

That is the challenge of Thomas to us all.

El tiempo

Desde aquí mando un desafío: Que escriban algún comentario todos aquellos a los que les afecte mucho el tiempo.

En el Reino Unido es mejor tomarse este tema a cachondeo. Es lo que hacen los ingleses y no les falta razón. Si se comieran mucho la cabeza con esto ya se habrían suicidado. Ellos mismos reconocen con bastante sentido del humor que el tiempo en su país es más deprimente que otra cosa. Normal. Un país situado a una latitud alta, y rodeado de mar, que ya sabemos que aporta mucha humedad y neutraliza las temperaturas. Conclusión: El verano no existe. La estación llamada verano es un conjunto de días locos donde en el mismo día tienes todos los tipos de clima. Y sensación de calor, más bien escasa.

A mí personalmente me fastidian mucho más los días faltos de luz en invierno que el mal tiempo. Aunque a decir verdad, el mal tiempo estropea mucho los planes. Cuando me refiero a mal tiempo pienso en un clima frío, ventoso y lluvioso. Ya me diréis si se puede salir al campo con un clima de estas características. En el RU casi que no puedes salir al campo. Todo está muy verde, bonito y floreado, pero a cambio no puedes dar un paso porque está todo lleno de barro. Y estoy hablando de un día no lluvioso. La única manera de no llenarte de barro hasta las orejas es salir un día después de unas dos semanas sin llover, lo cual no es muy fácil que ocurra.

En fin, aguantarse es lo que toca.

Turismo por Inglaterra

Bueno, voy a intentar aquí hacer un resumen de algunos sitios que he visitado en Inglaterra y lo que más vale la pena ver.

York: Las casitas de barro, la catedral enorme y preciosa.

Oxford y Cambridge: Los colleges están genial.

Durham: Catedral normanda, es difícil encontrar algo igual.

Windermere: Un crucerito por el lago. El museo de Beatrix Potter está bastante bien, curioso.

Liverpool: Me parece una ciudad interesante. Por supuesto no perderse el Cavern Club, pub donde tocaban los Beatles.

Lancaster: Si vas a caer por aquí, el castillo vale la pena. Es un castillo-cárcel, poco frecuente encontrarlo por ahí.

Lincolnshire: Cerca de Grantham está la casa llamada Woolsthorpe Manor, la casa natal de isaac Newton, no muy conocida por aquí, por cierto.

Nottingham: Interesante si tienes curiosidad por la leyenda de Robin Hood. Hacia el norte está el bosque de Sherwood, que es donde Robin Hood se reunía con la gente.

Stonehenge: Es lo más pintoresco que te puedes encontrar en este país. Se ve muy rápido, lo único malo es no poder verlo desde arriba para poder apreciar el círculo perfecto.

Bath: A destacar los baños romanos y la abadía. La ciudad en conjunto se ve muy bonita.

Warwick: Lo que vale la pena aquí es el castillo, es el castillo medieval más grande que hay en Inglaterra. Hacen también típicos espectáculos medievales.

Londres: Buffffff, pues a ver....... El distrito de Westminter con las casas del Parlamento, el Big Ben, la abadía. La catedral de san Pablo, la torre de Londres con el puente correspondiente, Hyde Park, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Marble Arch, y todos los museos, como el Bristish Museum, National Gallery, Madame Tussaud, Victoria and Albert. Como si quieres pasar en Londres un mes viendo museos.

Chauvinism

We often say that the French are chauvinist as they believe all the French things are the best. In my opinion, it is a matter of interpretation. Who does not love their country? I see this chauvinism very clear in Spain showed by two sentences very popular throughout the country.

1. The Spaniards are the most friendly and open

Compared to?? Well, it just so happens that these sort of things are said without knowing we are talking about since it is easy to realize that who says it has never lived abroad and has rarely dealt with foreigners. This sentence, the one which titles this point, proves that perhaps the Spaniards (some of them) are open and friendly but also quite narrow-minded. We are as we are, not better than the rest. Otherwise, ask the Latin Americans their opinion about the Spaniards. And, mostly, they answer Spaniards are cold. But someone does not want to recognize it.

 2. There is no place like Spain.

Why? Because we have sunshine, good weather, good food... but, is that all for our lives? These sentence seems to me a lack of respect to the rest of the countries. As if the lifestyle in Spain is the best in the world. Again, why? I am sure that  British people living all their lives in United Kingdom and only knowing the United Kingdom believe that there is no place like the United Kingdom.

We should know other lifestyles, cultures and countries in order not to think we are always right.

Spanish PAELLA

Well, If you want to try cooking it and you do not live in Spain, you will have to adapt the recipe. Anyway, I am sure that the result will be more than acceptable.

Clove Scent

 

Take an orange. Cover its peel with cloves. If you want, you can make room in order to tie a ribbon around the orange. The scent lasts for a long time. I have it in my kitchen for one year and a half and the orange is not rotten, only dried. And it is also a good method to frighten the flies away.

Ni tanto ni tan calvo

Y quizá no voy bien de entendederas, pero lo digo en serio “mi no entender”.

A ver quien ahora, en España, se atreve a ponerse una pegatina de la bandera de española en el coche. Creo que ahora todos tenemos en la mente que si lo hacemos puede ser que a la mañana siguiente nuestro coche acabe rayado. Algo tan normal como una bandera, todos los países la tienen, ahora está mal visto. Y si la pones eres facha y rancio.

Parece que en España no se pueda nombrar la palabra España. Y esto es algo que no ocurría hace unos cuantos años o yo al menos lo sentía muy diferente. Es increíble cómo cambian las cosas en cuatro días, como se suele decir. Si dices España eres de la derecha más rancia.

Bien eres partidario del buen rollito y del todo vale o si no eres un derechista y un rancio. Y digo yo que se puede estar en una postura media, pero esto no cabe en la cabeza de algunos. Va en serio, “mi no entender”.

A real disaster

 

I do not know how Holland and Scandinavian countries tackle the teaching of foreign languages. It is amazing how they have been able to speak English perfectly since they are very young.

One thing is obvious: In a class with thirty people, the easiest method is to explain grammar, to correct some exercises…. But a language is not alive in that way. Practising conversation must be mandatory. Of course, this is much more difficult as the groups of student have to be very small,  more teachers are necessary, therefore more resources and therefore more money. And the assessments would take longer since a written exam can be done by a thousand people at the same time, but not an oral exam, obviously.

And what about the teachers? People who have just achieved a bachelor degree in English are not fluent in spoken English. I know about this because they assure it. This is very serious, they are our teachers. The student of these type of degrees should live for a while in the foreign country related to the language they are studying. It is the only way of getting used to the language and gaining in fluency.

Another important point: The parents. Because the children do not leave the school completely educated. For example, although our children are attending a bilingual school, why do not we watch with them a DVD in the second language after school, for half an hour or an hour? This practice would help a lot in order to improve our children’s listening skills. And you know, the sooner, the better.

The problem is that, generally, the vast majority of the people are not aware of how important the knowledge of foreign languages is. Mainly because foreign languages are not useful for them in their day-to-day life and then they do not transmit that importance to their children.

I think that, in general, we are scared of living abroad because we are not skilled in foreign languages. I believe that if we were able to communicate using foreign languages we would look for chances in other countries more often.

I hope the situation in your countries is better than in Spain, my country.

Outsiders (I)

I would like to share with you some Bible studies that a group of hard-working ladies prepare for us (ladies, mainly foreigners).

I start introducing several studies related to "outsiders". An outsider, in this context, is someone we feel uncomfortable talking to, someone different from the rest of the society.

Luke 17: 11-19 Jesus heals ten man with leprosy. What do we feel like when for any reason we are "outsiders"?

1 John 1: 5-10 Jesus came to this world so that we can be part of God’ family, to belong. Our problem is not illness. Our problem is sin. It is wonderful to be an insider to belong.

A ver si sacamos pecho, que no se diga

Venga, vamos a ver si no nos toman tanto el pelo. Cuando escuché a principios de año que habían subido el salario mínimo a la cantidad de 600 euros, bueno, les debería dar vergüenza decirlo. ¿Se puede hacer algo en España con 600 euros? Pues eso. Pero encima lo dicen como sacando pecho.

Si en Francia el mínimo son 1200, ¿y es vivir en Francia el doble de caro que España? No sé, depende de dónde vivas, pero en la mayor parte de los sitios no creo.
